Becoming the People
We Are Called to Be

Becoming the People We Are Called to Be Becoming the People We Are Called to Be Becoming the People We Are Called to Be

The Ongoing Journey...

Hearing how my heart speaks...

1:1 Spiritual Listening

What is Spiritual Listening?

Spiritual Listening is more rightly called "Spiritual Accompaniment."  With a combined nine years of philosophy, theology, discernment, and listening training, I welcome you to the experience of sharing and hearing the Holy Spirit's movement in your life.

Listening

In the story of the Road to Emmaus (Lk. 24: 13-35 [New American Bible, Revised Edition]), the two companions meet a stranger along the path who listened to them.  And their response?  "Were not our hearts burning?" (v.32).  Jesus "broke bread" (v.30) with them, which is what "accompaniment" means.  He helped them hear their own stories of faith.  What would that be like for you?

Imagine Accompaniment ("Breaking bread together")

  • 60-minutes.  Every month? Twice a month?
  • An opportunity for you to share and hear your story.
  • As you tell it to another.
  • Quiet and prayerful listening.

The First Meeting - The "Four Cs"

  1. Confidentiality: This is a safe space.  Nothing shared with me will be revealed to anyone else.  Further, even that you and I are meeting is held in confidence.
  2. Co-Discernment:  After the first or a few meetings, you will be able to sense if we are a good fit.  At any time, you can decide to stop this relationship and find another director.
  3. Context; Generally, each meeting begins with a brief prayer to welcome the Holy Spirit into our presence. Next, you are invited to share the events of your life and we can explore the calling or movement of God in those moments.  At times, moments of silence or additional prayer may be inspired.  In conclusion, we can summarize what has been shared and perhaps determine actions to take until we see each other again.  Then we end with a reflective prayer.
  4. Calendar:  We can meet at any frequency you wish; bi-weekly, once per month or every six weeks.  Conversations are scheduled for 60 minutes and are held at the Church or a place of your preference.  Virtual conversations are also possible.
